life.turns
Part of the Edinburgh Art Festival, life.turns is a project produced by blipfoto which uses its platform and its community (and anyone else) to co-create a new film.
I had the pleasure of meeting up with blipfounder Joe Tree this morning and it was a fascinating conversation about how a personal pet passion for photography turned into a vibrant global social community. And then how that community is being challenged to use their existing vast creative resources to try a new project.
In due course I shall write up life.turns as a festivalslab innovation case study but in the meantime, have a listen to Joe talk about blipfoto, the project and the future.

They’ve also been working with Festivals Edinburgh this year, of which festivalslab is a part (you can see some striking festivals-related images here from their community) – so it’s terrific to see an Edinburgh company doing new and innovative work with the festivals. There’s something very elegant about the best digital talent in the city together working with the festivals – and at the edge of both. And so it’s exciting to think about what what might come next, not only from blipfoto, but also from the rest of the vibrant digital scene here in Edinburgh and indeed Scotland.
What should be in a festivalslab newsletter?
At the Innovation Working Group meeting yesterday, we came up with the idea of a newsletter which is just as interesting to staff from across the festivals as well as anyone else who is interested in Edinburgh, in festivals and in innovation.
So we’re currently working up this idea and looking into what might be the most interesting and engaging content to include.
Our initial list includes:
- latest lab news
- digital news & events in&around Edinburgh
- examples/micro-case studies of innovation in the arts
- examples/micro-case studies of innovative projects wherever they are from
- interesting trends and what they might mean for festivals
- blogs and twitter feeds to follow
So two questions…how does that sound? and what else should be included?
Innovations at this year’s book festival
It’s of course important to remember that innovation isn’t just about digital – it’s about making good ideas happen whatever type of idea they may be. Last week saw the launch of the 2010 programme for the Edinburgh International Book Festival, the first of new director Nick Barley – and it’s an absolute corker. As part of their programme they are introducing five innovations…hear Nick talk about them here:
